Description
A sitz bath is a warm water bath used for healing or cleansing purposes and for treating dilated painful hemorrhoids. You sit in the bath of 2-3 inches of warm water for 10-15 minutes, 2-3 times a day. The water covers only your hips and buttocks and enhances circulation in the hemorrhoidal veins. It also causes the rectal area of muscles to relax so that the veins recede back.
Sitz baths are often used to relieve pain, itching, or muscle spasms. The baths are often recommended to relieve pain and speed healing after hemorrhoid surgery or an episiotomy (surgical cut to widen the vagina opening during childbirth).
Instruction
Sit in the bath of 2-3 inches of warm water (that covers only your hips and buttocks) for 10-15 minutes, 2-3 times a day.
Side Effects
There are no real side effects to sitz baths but patients can develop infections of the perineum if they have surgical scars and do not clean the bath.
